Mangalore: The Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, inaugurated MRPL’s new product, Toluene, at the refinery on January 11, 2025. During his visit, the Minister also held discussions with senior officials of MRPL.
The Toluene facility, with an annual production capacity of 40 TMT, marks a significant step in India’s journey towards self-reliance and increased competitiveness in the global petrochemical market.
Toluene, an essential aromatic hydrocarbon, is used in various industries, including pharmaceuticals, chemicals, paints, and defence. While India’s annual demand for Toluene is around 650 TMT, domestic production is currently limited to 160 TMT. MRPL’s addition of 40 TMT annually will help address this supply gap and save approximately $3 million in foreign exchange every year.
This move supports India’s broader goal of reducing dependence on imports while fostering industrial growth, aligning with the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
